My parents are like that, too. They were raised in the middle east and had to put up with a lot of oppression so they're really resentful. But when we don't share their opinions, and defend Muslims, they get pissed.
My mom has never been there, she's just bought into the stereotype. She got very upset when I pointed out that it seems unfair to charecterize women who get stoned for leaving the house unaccompanied as bloodthirsty murderers.
I agree. It's one thing when my brother, who was stationed in Egypt and saw a lot of bad things, says "all Muslim men are abusive assholes" and another when my mom, who has never traveled farther than Mexico and doesn't know any Muslims, says "all Muslims are trying to kill Americans." They may both be gross generalizations, but one comes from personal experience and has some reality backing it.
