My student loans went back into that happy happy place of me having to pay them. Except I was trying to save money for when I have to move 1500 miles away and start paying $1100 a month for rent. I don't know when my student loan money for vet school will be coming in, which is why I was hoping to save a decent sum from working -- that way if I ( Read more... )

Call the lender and ask to do one of two things:

1- Reduce the payment amount. They usually will do it as long as you're paying *something*

2- Put it into forbearance. This will add to the overall interest more than putting it into deferment would but you can at least save money for your move.

1. Might work on one lender, but the other lender I've tried and they've said they can't/won't (of course, this is the one that's $270 instead of the cheaper loan, and the one that won't let me consolidate). :( The other lender, I'm going to definitely be trying to at least get an income-sensitive payment plan.

2. Yeah... hopefully I'll be able to get the loans current for this pay cycle and then kick the shit out of them with forbearance once I've made a recent payment. *crosses fingers*

One of my loans has deferments for unemployed (different plans for if you're collecting unemployment, actively looking and using an online job search engine, neither...) You might want to look into that once you're month of work is up.

I know what you mean. I mercifully don't have any debt at the moment (just paid off my credit card) but even still the prospect of grad school = the prospect of digging myself into a giant hole financially is not a nice one, but nor is relying on my parents, since they will have two kids in college at that point and be paying for the nieces' day care (which is about as expensive as Bethany's private high school). So either enormous debt or enormous guilt. Ugh. Money issues suck. However, I think by virtue of the fact that you are trying to plan and are just getting kicked by unexpectedness, it shows that you are not like your parents, you are just having a run of bad luck. This is our poor time of life, but we'll get there. :)

Geez paying for college really needs to be easier. It sucks that you are being punished for wanting to further your education.

I am so sorry you are having problems :/
