In Texas, Christmas was okay. Natalie never liked when Kyle threw away his presents from dad, but she understood that dad had hurt Kyle, and everything else was nice. Mama made them hot chocolate and they watched Miracle on 34th Street on Christmas Eve, even if Kyle didn't watch with them.

It's different now. There aren't any presents that aren't from dad and Jared. Natalie went shopping with Jared to find the perfect present for Kyle and saw the apron that her mother had asked for last year, and she'd cried into Jared's chest for what felt like hours, until there was nothing left in her that could come out.

They decorated the tree with dad and Jared's ornaments, and mama's too, and it looked nice, even if it was a little crowded. It would have felt wrong if they just had dad and Jared's things. Mama still matters"What are you still doing up, Natty?" asks Kyle, pulling her from her thoughts ( ... )

This is lovely.

I really like how the kids have settled in with their life with Jensen and Jared, but still miss their mother - and how they need each other to deal with that, not just the grown-ups.
