Scam? What's going on?

Nov 03, 2005 14:15

I just had a phone call from soul_rider, someone claiming to be our electricity producers (not suppliers) came to the door and informed us that there have been "complaints" from people in our area that people have been paying too high a rate for the electricity. Apparently if we're paying "too much" we can apply for "compensation". Right. They were asking to ( Read more... )

This is a "switch to us as we are cheaper scam" did she note who it was?

Like I said it, she told me it was someone claiming to be from the electricity producers rather than a distributor. This just really isn't sitting right with me, it sounds extremely dodgy.

Yep - just had em round.

It's a Scottish Power derivative - can't remember the actual name.

It's a 'We Generate power so sell it to you cheaper than the distributers' type.

Yes they are actually cheap, but they lie about what they are doing on the doorstep.

Thank you :)

The chap said he might come back round later, I shall tell him to push off when/if he does.

Don't forget to ask for, and make a note of, their ID when they do call and then report the buggers. You'll have the glowing satisfaction of getting them sacked and saving simpler types from being duped!

Now there's a good idea, I get to be vindictive and hurtful whilst also doing a public service. Joza, you're a star!

Apparently he's only a small lad with braces on his teeth, he won't give me any trouble if he starts getting obnoxious.

We had someone do the same a few months ago, I held him at the door for 10 minutes having a laugh as he wanted to talk to the person that pays the bills but my folks weren't in. I asked him for details and he started being coy and avoiding direct questions. I tried to get answers but didn't and told him to go away. I then stood and watched him knock on my neighbours door for 5 minutes before I popped out and told him they were away. Not impressed with him really.

Funny we had something like this a few months ago when a guy came to check our meter. As we let him into the compound then he said "Oh and I just need to ask you some questions about it". The Wife replied "No you don't not to read the meter". To which he said "I need to know your tarrif."

At which point we sent me off with a flea in his ear.

*nods*

The chap who came round today asked to see the bill. Cheeky little bugger.

Yeah - I slightly truncated the story - as he basically kept on at Sarah for 10 minutes not taking "no" for an answer. She's a strong woman (and scarier than I am) but for the first time I nearly had to play the grumpy husband role!

Damn you bloody sly salesman! ju_bear November 3 2005, 16:49:13 UTC
Hmmmm, a couple of years ago, I got bamboozled by 2 guys in suit when the whole hoo huh abt gas tariffs meant that it was open hunting season for gas companies to use any means to get ppl to convert to them pronto. Imagine 2 tall obnoxious men saying that they were from the gas board who wants to check on tarrifs so that they could protect me from paying too much. Yes, they managed to get my old bill and look at my meter coz I was terrified of 2 6ft mean looking men at door of my home and I was alone. They assured me I was not switching supplier but left me a pink form which I read thoroughly after they left and found that they have switched me by deception. SO I rang the company up and yelled at them and they made sure I wasn't switched and annulled the contract and said they will deal with the 2 salesmen for their misconduct coz I had their names on the form they gave me. Huh! Then I rang up my gas supplier to inform them if this company try to take our account, they are doing by deception and without my genuine permission ( ... )

More power to your elbow Ju! That's the spirit. Door-to-door people of any kind get short shrift from me. "Look, I'm an information specialist - if I wanna know about something I FIND OUT MYSELF - now go procreate yourself".

Either that or I slip on the leather jacket, take off my glasses and play mean/insane. Works wonders on Mormons/ Jehovah's witnesses too. "Why should I follow your god - YOU SHOULD FOLLOW MINE!!!" Heh, practical applications for LARP - who'd have thought it.
