Went to the doctor - unlikely to be a serious injury (my mum made him write out a script thingy for an x-ray just in case) but need to keep off it and elevate it and ice it, etc. etc. It's swollen up a bit and I'm making old person noises when I hobble, but I guess I'll survive

I'm sure you're already aware but it really is very important to stay off the ankle as much as possible, keep it elevated and iced until the swelling has gone down. (I found the plastic bags you can fill with water and put in the freezer to make ice cubes wrap around the ankle very well - much better than a bag of frozen peas! and much less hassle to refreeze and reuse).
The first time I did my ankle a serious injury, I was halfway through a course of iceskating and I did just strap the ankle up (once the swelling had gone down a bit) and go back, but my boots were rigid plastic had quite a lot of ankle support so I felt a bit more secure than if they were leather boots.
Hope it gets better soon!

Anyway. Now I have to consider whether or not I can brave public transport on crutches tomorrow...

I felt too self conscious to use my crutches this summer and luckily had a boss who wouldn't hear of me coming into the office on public transport. At least you should be able to get a seat!!
