Went to the doctor - unlikely to be a serious injury (my mum made him write out a script thingy for an x-ray just in case) but need to keep off it and elevate it and ice it, etc. etc. It's swollen up a bit and I'm making old person noises when I hobble, but I guess I'll survive.
What happened was that we began training with another freaking weaving pace line, and on top of the usual weaving we had to crouch down and touch people's skates as we passed. So my usual nerves with the weaving pace line combined with poor derby form and general lack of skill meant I toppled over awkwardly and my foot got twisted. That was, what, the first few minutes of the session starting?
Turns out Berzerker knows my name*, because she came up and helped with first aid advice (along with another freshie, and a freshie's partner who was some sort of nurse I think) and I just felt very frustrated and sorry for myself. After I got wrapped up I hobbled over to the train station (ankles are necessary for walking - did you know?) and have been hover-parented since getting home**. (Basil also takes the opportunity of me lying on the couch to jump up next to me and try and get scratches.)
Got a note for a day off work tomorrow, so I'll see what it's like when I wake up. And I guess training is out too in any case. Hopefully the swelling goes down in a week, and then I can go back to skating with it strapped up? That'll work, right?
Sigh.
So. This is what an ankle injury feels like.
Can't say I'm all that enamoured.

** It's my first significant injury that wasn't caused by burning or cutting myself at work, and my first sports injury, so they're anxious.
