A Very Belated Birthday

Kiku let himself into Willem's apartment, not having dropped the habit of knocking first to announce his presence, despite having been given a key and an understanding that this was essentially his second home. He was immediately hit with the smell of smoked fish, and his stomach rumbled as he set Pochi down to scamper off and greet Lucy, who was begging for some of said fish.　Straightening, he smiled as he caught the Dutchman's eye.

"What's all this?"

He turned to smile at Kiku, a move which was ruined by the cat trying to climb his leg for the 6th time and by being barreled into by a ball of cream fur. Regaining his balance, he pried the cat off his jeans before scratching the dog between the ears.

"Happy birthday," he replied, standing with the cat tucked firmly under one arm. "Sorry it's late."

Kiku moved across the kitchen and being careful of the cat, tugged Willem's arm so that he'd lean down for a quick "hello" and "thank you" kiss.

"It smells wonderful," he beamed shyly. "You didn't have to go to the trouble, really. But thank you." Birthdays were not something he really felt like celebrating lately, but if Willem was going to do something so nice for him, he could forget that he had just turned one year closer to 40.

Normally he would have lingered over the kiss a little bit, but the squirming cat in his arms put a stop to that. Instead he took her over to the kitchen corner, singling for Pochi to follow, and set them in front of a pair of food bowls that sat there. Turning back to the counter, he grabbed a small plate of discarded fish pieces.

"Do you mind if I give Pochi some? I'd hate to give her a treat and not him."
