Willem had been grateful for the distraction Kiku offered him.
Seeing Johanna that morning had screwed with his head in way he hadn’t anticipated it ever would. It wasn’t just the shock of seeing her again, here of all places, but the hostility he’d had directed at him from someone he once thought he was in love with.
True, things hadn’t always been great between them, but he had never suspected that she still hated him that much.
So when Kiku had called the Dutchman had gladly abandoned his agitated pacing of the balcony to join his friend in the park, hoping that some fresh air and good company would clear his head in a way even pipe smoking had failed him tonight.
When he arrived he secured his bike to a nearby bike rack and proceeded on foot, hands stuffed in the pockets of his jeans. It didn’t take him long to fine the Japanese man and his new pet, and he called to the other man as he approached.
Kiku smiled widely as Willem made his way across the park, going to meet him halfway. Pochi was very much asleep in his arms at the moment, but it really only added to the puppy's adorability and his overall good mood.
So good was his mood, in fact, that he did not immediately register that there was something off with his friend. Instead, he beamed, cradling the dog to his chest like it was a child. "Thank you for agreeing to meet me. I know it must have been out of your way."
Willem was glad to see Kiku happy. The last time they’d seen each other had been during the blackout, and before that had been when he was still delivering groceries so the man wouldn’t starve during his self-enforced isolation.
“It’s ok. I needed to get out tonight.”
He caught sight of the bundle of cream colored fur in the Japanese man’s arms, and when he looked closer he found himself looking at a sleeping puppy. Despite himself, his lips curved upwards a bit.
"He finally wore himself out from chasing leaves," he answered, the soft smile not leaving his lips. Carefully, he shifted the puppy forward, offering him to the much taller man. He knew very well that Willem had a soft spot for baby animals and was unlikely to refuse.
"Are you keeping well? I do apologize about not being in better touch after the incident with the blackout." The whole event was...strange, to put it lightly. He still wasn't sure on all of the relationships between the other house guests either. But it wasn't as if he could just ask...
