"-and he says to me, I kid you not, 'Blind date? No, far too risky.' And I was like 'whaaaaaaaat?'"
The bell jingled, but the prattling voice easily chimed over it. In through the front door pranced a woman who was distinctly not the kind of customer Remy was used to seeing in the shop.
Behind the strange being was Atthis, who looked far more harassed (and far more behind schedule) than she had ever seen her.
"So I looked him right in the eye-" a purse clanked on the counter in front of Remy, and the strange woman paused in her story long enough to say 'could you put this somewhere safe, dear?' and continued, "I said 'Yao. It's time you get yourself a boyfriend because dying after a lonely and unfulfilled life is not the way to go.' Well, he just perked right up and said 'sure thing, Thera.' Well, it didn't happen exactly like that, but that was the general idea."
Nod, nod, smile and nod. Atthis listened politely but a sideways glance in the instant Thera distracted herself with the girl behind the counter revealed a brief glimmer of exasperation
( ... )
Well, that happy chatter would certainly fill up the empty, half silent shop. Remy couldn't help but smile at the look on Atthis' face, wondering how many times she'd been responsible for that same expression. She didn't gossip the way it seemed the smaller woman was doing, but she did tend to prattle on about plays and college assignments when she got bored.
The purse had confused her for a moment, but she wasn't one to argue. She placed it behind the counter, next to her own, much less stylish backpack, waiting for the explanation she was fairly sure would be coming, eventually.
"Oh..." Needless to say, she hadn't expected the explanation she got. It made sense, though; she knew it would make her boss' life less hectic to have someone else she could call when Remy had to be in class, and it would make those long, slow shifts a little less mind numbing if she had someone to share the boredom.
She smiled warmly at the other woman - Thera. She'd need to remember that - and reached out for a hand shake. "It's nice to meet you."
Thera eyed the hand as if it were a worm offered by a little boy. The expression quickly shifted to a smile with a short laugh. "Mm. Pleasure." She tilted her hand towards Remy in some weird form of greeting, and lowered it. "Rhema Kirkland. You have a brother named Peter, yes?"
... Well... That was definitely awkward. Remy pulled her hand back to her side, a little self consciously, wondering just what that look was all about. She knew her hands were clean. She was surrounded by soap, for crying out loud. Maybe Thera was just from some obscure country where they didn't touch people, or something. She was sure The woman didn't mean to be rude. Everyone deserved more of an effort to get to know them than two seconds of awkwarly hovering hands.
Especially if they were friends of her family. Even more so if it was the sweet, quirky part of her family. Remy's own smile bounced right back. "You know Peter?"
