Elizaveta had stood for twenty-two minutes in front of her mirror that morning, doing nothing but staring at herself. She was having tea with Mr. Edelstein, and that meant that she had to be wearing her best clothes, with her best attitude, and a huge dreading feeling in her stomach. After she was finally pleased with her outfit, she spent another hour twisting her hair around, working out the knots and tangles ( ... )

Roderich set down his cup as well and wiped his hand on his lap napkin even though he hadn't touched anything dirty. He glanced over to Elizaveta and swallowed the sigh inside his mouth. He had suspected as much; Elizaveta spent most of her time in the house, and if Feliks was here, she would know. It meant, to Roderich, that Elizaveta was involved. If not, at least, she had allowed it to happen.

"And what is it, Miss Elizaveta? I hope you will be sincere with me," he said, crossing his legs and looking fully at her now.

Breathing in, she tried not to waver, "One day, a Polish man broke into your house. I took him down, but he somehow managed to convince me that it was 'just an accident'. And before I knew it, he had run off inside the mansion and when I finally found him, it was too late."

She breathed in deeply again and looked down into her lap. "I'm terribly sorry, Mr. Edelstein. I had suspected that he hadn't achieved anything. Obviously, I was wrong."

She braced herself for the bad news.

Roderich finally let out the sigh lodged in his chest. He shook his head, expressing his disappointment. He traced the smooth surface of the cup with his finger while he stared away for a moment. He contemplated just what he should do with Elizaveta. Certainly, she didn't perform her duties properly. Protecting his privacy was a huge responsibility, and Roderich couldn't help but feel that Elizaveta had failed him ( ... )
