(1) I'm hesitant to get sucked into Doctor Who fandom, but if someone has any good Eleven/River recs, especially for plotty, angsty epics, I would not say no ( Read more... )

(2) I have this question too, and quit after the same length of time. Life is too short.

(3) Claudia is so great! She's like all my favorite geek-girl characters but way better. Also did you see the episode where Kaylee and Simon ran a pie shop together and were secretly in looooove?

Yes! I love her grouchiness and snark, and I love how her flaws and problems are actually kind of realistic for a traumatized child prodigy. (And yeah, the pie shop thing was adorable.)

BBT is one of my favorite shows. They do bring in several key female geeks that get romantically involved with some of the guys, but the main dynamic is Penny and the guys. They get a little more balance in that as the seasons progress, in that she hangs out with them more and their infectious geekiness rubs off on her and they all start to become friends. I had forgotten that in the beginning she was just the unattainable girl they see in the hallway, until just now reading this!

Penny and Sheldon together is pure hilarity, and she grows into a great foil for him.

I felt the same way early in season 1 and stopped watching, then I happened upon it again toward the end of the first season and it was much better. Penny became a person not an object and they all have issues and annoying habits and they're all smart enough to know that they do and understand why the put up with each other. And also they do geeky stuff every week and I really sense that the writers are saying 'these things about us are funny, let's laugh together' not 'geeks are funny, let's laugh at them'.

Ahem.

I don't know when it got better because I have no intention of going back to see (I was pretty disgusted with the earlier eps). I think I saw the last 3-5 eps of the first season and was eager for season 2 when it returned.

Sorry I can't help more.

If the gender stereotypes in BBT bother you, give up. IMO, of course. This last season... eh. Bothered me.

I still watch it; I just turn my brain off and watch the surface, and on the surface it's still hilarious-- because it's geek humor written BY geeks, so that side of it is accurate and funny as hell. If you can just watch parts of it, it's wonderful.

Also, I'll watch this space for Eleven/River recs. I'd love to read that, also.
