Mostly a gratuitous icon post, because I wanted to use one of charmax's new icons from her halfamoon post. In keeping with Evilly Smirking Xena, I thought about pulling together a list of Unpopular Fannish Opinions, but had trouble coming up with any. See, I stay almost entirely within my friendslist of beautifully sane people, so the fact that thousands of ( ( Read more... )

Not at all! Yuletide is full of short stories, luckily! *g*

YOU ARE DEAD TO ME.

::offers cookies::

I admit that I have gotten into some shows because of the relationship hook: FS and XF both did that to me. But I find myself kicking back against the perceived expectation for romance more and more over time. It's practically transgressive to be a gen writer these days. *g*

See, I was all over the XF case file stories back in the day, but I realize now that to me, they weren't really gen, not in the ways that matter. Any story that problematized their relationship and placed it at the center of their work and their lives read as romantic to me, just as the show itself did. Whether they had sex or even talked about their feelings was kind of irrelevant.

Parental or pseudo-parental relationships are nearly as reliable a hook as romantic relationships, so that has come in handy with the Winchester clan and will presumably help me out with SCC. But beyond that, my list of gen narrative kinks is pretty rare and specialized. Stories that force the characters to question the entire moral foundation of their lives will always get me, for example. Or class war -- I'm sure that when I finally someday find some fanfic centered on class struggle, I will be riveted *g*. Still, it would be even more appreciated if the characters could manage to fall in love and have sex *while* working for the revolution.

There's a long, juicy Gundam Wing epic which is your last sentence exactly, and does not require canon knowledge beyond what I could tell you in three sentences. The prose is clunky but the characterization, worldbuilding, and very real-feeling politics (anarchist) make up for in spades. Few but really hot sex scenes. Let me know if you want those sentences and a link.

*criez*

I think this means I will never finish my 100,000 word epic about Rodney learning macrame. It was a grand drama, I tell you! Just a man and his cottony loops!!

Does his thread cause him to question the entire moral foundation of his life? If so, write on! That's my one bulletproof gen kink. :-D

It is earth-shattering macrame. It is macrame to shake your soul.

Oh, I love you.

I mean, I'll read it. But when I'm combing my list of unread stories and looking for something to entertain me, it's not my first choice.
