Mostly a gratuitous icon post, because I wanted to use one of charmax's new icons from her halfamoon post. In keeping with Evilly Smirking Xena, I thought about pulling together a list of Unpopular Fannish Opinions, but had trouble coming up with any. See, I stay almost entirely within my friendslist of beautifully sane people, so the fact that thousands of (emotionally) teenage fangirls love stories where Everyone Hates Rodney And He Attempts Suicide doesn't really register with me as "popular", because I only ever see it in sgastoryfinders requests.
So to me, "unpopular" would mean "contrary to most of my beautifully sane friends". And I can only come up with one:
I, Loligo, hardly ever read straight-up gen fanfic. I read it: (1) when my friends write it; (2) when it's short; (3) *sometimes*, *occasionally*, when it's a longer piece that is so extraordinary that it's recommended across the length and breadth of fandom; or (4) *sometimes*, *occasionally*, when a non-romantic relationship is intense enough to provide the same emotional rush.
But for the most part, if it's over 1500 words and I haven't known you for five years, I won't read it unless there's a major romantic subplot. There are highly recced SGA & SPN classics that I've been meaning to finish for years, but just can't work up the interest because the relationship hook is not there.
