Well, for the second time, it appears that I have failed the second year of uni, again. Exactly the same reasons as last time: being in the mindset that I can simply coast through, do a little work and still get some reward ( Read more... )

fail!, uni

:( Maybe the course isnt right for you? It could be pushing you in the wrong direction. Sounds like it's not grabbing you're attention and love otherwise you'd have more enthusaism for it.

Don't give up hope! There are plenty of options from here on :) x

Maybe it's just who you are? No point being disappointed if you're just not right for the course! That doesn't mean you're incapable: I failed Art, I failed Media Production, and now I've failed Creative Writing, but I'm not incapable!! I'm just not cut out for these "creative" courses where you're ultimately expected to do what you're told and conform to the standards the course expects of you XD

I'm pretty sure you won't need a degree to do game design, if that's what you want to do. Learn how to do it your own way. You'll probably get further then! Natural talent and ability is far more important than a bit of paper with some letters/numbers on it.

Not everyone is suited to learned in the standard academic environment. I'm not. That crazy ginger pikey I live with isn't (she doesn't even have any GCSEs!). There are plenty of others like it too! So don't be ashamed and just do what YOU want! DON'T GIVE UP ON THE DREAM!

This is true, I guess. Ultimately I suppose I have a certain apathy towards work, hence staying in education.

Ultimately a lot of jobs in the games industry require at least a 2:1 degree in computing.

I'm not going to pretend I know a lot about the modern gaming industry (it makes me cry), buuuuuut I'm pretty sure there must be alternative routes into it. I mean, Shigeru Miyamoto was just a lowly artist when he started out! Peter Moleface and Will Wright never had computing degrees (I checked out Sid Meier, but wikipedia doesn't list his education! Wouldn't be surprised if he didn't have a fancy degree either, though!).

If the greatest game designers in the world can get by without a degree, then it must be possible! You've just got to approach it from a different angle. Maybe go the indie route? Make awesome games with Blondie and prove to the industry you don't NEED a silly degree because YOU'RE MOTHERFUCKING AWESOME and SAMUEL L JACKSON MOTHERFUCKING SAID SO.

Better than just being one of hundreds slaving away on the latest Devil May Cr...sorry, God of War clone, surely?!

Dayum =( Sorry to hear that!

Is there no student support thingys you can contact/attend? The type that help organise yourself, and find the best way of working for you? Maybe even signing yourself up to some plan with student support to meet once a month and discuss your learning habits? Maybe its more a psychological problem than learning problem? Ah, sorry I'm no good at helping, just trying to throw in some possibilites other than quitting! Don't quit unless your absolutely certain there's no way on from here! Talk to someone in uni first!

The uni has academic councillors, etc. - I guess I'm being somewhat melodramatic.

It's true that right now I don't know what goes on, but hopefully Monday will make things a little clearer.

Aw hun, I agree with what your friends have said. There's lots of different options, and none mean you should be disappointed in yourself at all!

One of my friends is doing a games design course in college rather than university as the college one lets him be more creative & freer - maybe this could be another option? Good luck whatever you choose and don't be downhearted! :)

Awww *hugs* I'm really clueless about this kind of stuff but I don't want you to give it all up. Hmm, maybe do the coursework with others in your year or those that have done it so maybe they can help? idk. This comment isn't much help but just wanted to let you know, whatever happens, we're all be there for you. Good luck with it all! ♥
