Doesn't your sponsor have to be someone who has already been through the program? I agree that Ed knew a lot about it and that it's probably because of Greg, but I don't see him ever having a drinking problem himself. The only things I can imagine him being dependent on are the job and Sophie, I think everything else he can enjoy without needing.
I think you're right about how the three of them met, now. Wordy has very definitely known Greg a long time, but they're not as close as either of them are to Ed. I do think Ed and Wordy joined the SRU either at the same time or very close together. Months at most. I have no reason to think this, other than that in my head they've been partners for ever.
You are right, your sponsor does have to be in or have been through the program. Which makes sense... a stranger will not let you pull the crap a friend would let you get away with.
I don't see Ed as ever having a drinking problem, either. I would guess that with Greg likely going through the program Ed inserted himself as an unofficial sponsor whether Greg wanted it or not. ;)
>> My personal fannon on some of the character's backstory has Greg as being a cop the longest, by a few years or so. I think he met Ed, probably working together, and they bonded. And Ed either met Wordy at the academy, or soon after. I think they worked together and became friends, but that Greg only knew Wordy through Ed. I don't think Greg got to really know Wordy until they were all in the SRU.
Certainly sounds plausible, and I think your personal fanon is probably very close to what TPTB have in mind for how and when the three of them joined the SRU. And if it's not, it should be! ;o)
I have a few things to do at home, and then me and my laptop are going to the coffee shop where I will make myself sit down and work on stuff. Your stuff is first! It is good, btw!

Hee. Yes, this exactly. Not so much there-when-you-want-me as there-whether-you-want-me-or-not.
