Got a paid LJ account? You may not have one for very much longer. Someone has ferreted out a comment on the Russian LJ which suggests that LJ will drop paid accounts in the spring. Not that we poor English-speaking users got told, though that's hardly surprising given that LJ has virtually shut down its US office, again without telling ( Read more... )

I'm roguebelle over there, too. I used their migration to copy my entire journal over, all the way back to 2001 (and teenaged entries I'd rather forget, really), and I've been crossposting for a while now. You're right that the functionality isn't as high with so many people still clinging on here, but... well, that may change. I do have a Tumblr, and I like it for what it is, but there are still times, and not a few of them, when I want to say something substantive (which is just pointless there) and not to the whole world. I like my f-list. I like my custom locks. I like the things I say here being more important than the largely superfluous and ephemeral scrawl of Tumblr. But I can't stay on a site that gives me headaches. :/

Thanks; I've added you back. I have nothing against Tumblr, any more than you do, but LJ has a very specific feel to it, which Tumblr/Facebook/whatever don't. Of course, at some point in the future, Dreamwidth may go the same way -- though I think it would have to try quite hard to implode as spectacularly as LJ seems to be doing. But for now, it does most (maybe all; I haven't explored enough yet) of the things I want, while LJ, increasingly, doesn't.

I have a DW account but I only use it to back up my entries here. I really don't want to move over though. I wouldn't be happy unless I could take every single one of my friends here with me.

I feel very much the same, actually. I wouldn't have stuck with LJ through so much management idiocy over the last few years otherwise. But if the proposed changes become mandatory, it will literally hurt me to use this site, and that's the point at which I will be forced to move. Sadly, I suspect that at least some of my friends will simply give up on long-form blogging altogether, another reason for me to be angry at LJ.
