I felt the same way, but I wasn't footing the bill. Had over 500 people at my wedding in a swank place where people pay membership fees to rub elbows with other powerful people. It was way over the top and definitely not my style, but the 100 or so friends and family I invited had a good time (and honestly so did I). I just felt the day was less about me and my wife making a life-long commitment and more about the party.

We were really just trying to concentrate on us but I suppose the families need to have something as well; balancing it isn't easy but I'm glad we went that route.
