very grateful for what I have. I've only been to NYC four times, once in 1978 as a kid, once in 1984, once in 1993 and once in 2001. I didn't get a lot of tourist time during the 2001 trip, but it was clear things were getting better and I thought that was good. The biggest thing I noticed in 2001 is that people were smiling. I hadn't remembered that from my other trips.

Try being from Detroit. At least NYC, well, is NYC.

Yes, I def. think that things are improving around here. I'm always surprised when people romanticize stuff they have very little actual experience with.

Detroit, now there's a place I've not heard good things about...

You and I always have this back and forth that I really don't want to go to NYC and you say I must. Frankly, I can't shake the images I have from the 70s-90s. I would always be white-knuckled and looking over my shoulder...and I still haven't been given a convincing reason to go itinerary-wise. I'd rather spend that kind of money going overseas. :)

It's such a different city now - but then again, all you need is one idiot and it all goes to pot.

I think when your daughter is old enough, the city deserves a trip just to see how it is at that point. It'll be an interesting family experience, I think.

I feel the same way about my city and my state actually, only with different things. people can be quite annoying when they don't actually live there so they just don't get it.

For serious. Now, for some reason, I thought you were here. Where is home then?

What's your favorite part about the holidays? (Besides the food.)

Sounds like things are improving, and that's great to hear. I visited NYC in 1994 and we spent the entire time wandering around on foot, utterly clueless with all our traveling cash on our persons. Sounds like we were lucky. I loved that trip. I've never been anywhere that felt more alive. The very air seemed to crackle with energy and potential.

While prostitution's not legal here within the city limits anymore, the hookers are still here. We're also on the I-80 corridor, the main artery to and from California, so we get ALL the bums. And with the highest foreclosure rate in the nation, you can imagine we havea lot of homeless. But it's still my town. I've rarely felt afraid here. Only thing that scares me are the tourists...

No wolves, but we occasionally get bears in town, and there have been a couple of mountain lions sighted in the last three or four years. They've been known to chase joggers. We have all the fun! ;)

Besides the food...hmmm...

I supposed it's a forced way to get together with family and friends. The thing is, we need a time where it's expected to see each other because years manage to slip by otherwise, don't you think.

Yes, improving greatly and I for one am very happy about the matter.

Bears and mountain lions, that sounds distinctly unfun.
