i can see why he declined though and i'm behind him 100%. i'm sad that this is it and his national career has ended on such a bad note but what he contributed to the NT will never be forgotten.

he's been a huge part of the team for more than 10 years and he's one of the best midfielders this team has had. personally i think the whole situation was handled terribly and he deserved much more respect than what he was given. he was the person who got a lot of people interested in the german NT so really, asking everyone to "move on" is ridiculous, have any of your favourite players retired on such a bad note? if they have, then you'd understand why this is a big deal to people.

If he thinks he owes it to his fans, then he really should just play. I know it must feel more like a pittance than an honor to him given the circumstances, but he'd really make so many people happy just by playing five minutes in one more game. :\
