I gotta say; I'm finding this current arc a thrilling read! It feels darker than Water 7 - Oda's really bringing out the punches. :DD
When I saw that page that you've posted here, I was very much disturbed, but more by the fact that that jerk's riding a human being around, who is practically bleeding to death. And I felt sorry for Marie's fiancee ;_;
Seems like the question surrounding Camie's wish to ride at the carnival was answered. I figured it was because she might get kidnapped...
On a more upbeat note, Oda's artwork does seem to be getting better in terms of line-shading and detail. I loved how the rides all look like actual theme park rides you'd find today, and not just the regular old roller coaster.
The only thing it's missing is the dramatic character conflict of W7, but everything else is WAY more twisted and I'm eager to see how things pan out. :D
I wasn't as shocked by the "riding" since it was established last chapter that pirate slaves were pretty much "pets".. livestock wasn't a far stretch after. But dude.. they also grab common citizens off the streets like that to 'amuse' themselves? Not to mention going out of their way just to be assholes (shooting that injured man for NO reason.)
But why are mermaids/fishmen such rare targets? The slavers are sitting on top of an island full of them.
I loved the Tea Cup ride parallel. Though from what I understand Oda does have assistants helping with the backgrounds and other non-character details which he probably didn't have before, so there is some credit there.
We've seen the odd nobody get killed by bad guys in the past to show just how bad they are, but it's never been sadistically drawn out like this. And the victims/fodder weren't even slightly elaborated on like these were (the pirate with his family/son and the Marie with her fiance).
I hate to think about how this "reverse" process takes place.
Whoa, what do you mean? :o I figured they were just sent back to the lower classes.
(It turns out there is more to the fish-fears after all.)
I never cared about Hatchi whatsoever XP so I don't feel anything for that pairing. I still think SanjixCamie is cute =3= at least to keep sanji busy. Dx
LOL that's how I feel: Sanji needing to be kept busy. But remember Camie said there's a Mermaid Princess in Fishman Isle who's supposed to be the most beautiful of them all. Sanji probably won't want to leave.
I didn't think much of Hatchie until his cute relationship with Camie. It made him interesting. :) (Not to mention I now have proof against the complainers of "no romance in OP omg!")
lol yes XD I hope there is going to be more romance in this series in the future, tho I'm not into it that much lately =( (I even haven't checked the latest chapters ,I just know whats going on )oda needs to hurry up and add some LuNa, before I completely forgot about this managa. XD;
Yeah the Duval arc wasn't that interesting, but the recent events have sucked me back in! Though I'm beginning to think it's going to be a million years before we reach (the anticipatingly LuNa-filled) Fishman Island.
There's no such thing as an "old entry" when you only post about 5 entries PER YEAR!
And you are correct. Hatchan/Camie (Catchie!) is probably the most blatantly canon, non-consumated couple in OP to date. Interesting how Oda's been packing on more of that lately.. But Frobin is a CLOSE SECOND. They were even designated "mommy" and "daddy" of the crew in an SBS. If that's not an endorsement by the creator himself, I don't know what is.
WTF are people bashing THAT now? Come on! There are like, four fans. LET US HAVE OUR DIGNITY. And I think the fact that Hatchie is this Octopus freak just makes me love it all the more. It certainly doesn't bother Camie. Instead she's all: :3 (And god yes, draw more!) There are some ships I'd like to see at least 'pushed' towards canon. Like, Robin decides to settle down on an island with Franky and Luffy and Nami go sailing off together to finish that world map. (That'd make meh happy~) But yeah, I wouldn't want an epilogue saying how many kids they had and when they died, etc. That stuff just KILLS any imagining in the fans of what happened thereafter.
(Also: I've had bad experiences where ships of mine were destroyed by terrible writing when the creators decided to canonize them. I'm afraid of this happening agaaaain!)

Is this the first time we've seen Oda portray humans treating humans like mere tools or objects for amusement?
The bit where that blob said 'send my fifth wife back to being a commoner' - I hate to think about how this "reverse" process takes place. >_<

Really? That slipped my mind...interesting point, though.
