I finally finished my help_haiti! On the one hand, it's slightly more than a week late, which makes me feel pretty lame; on the other hand, it's over four times as long as I promised it would be, which uh. I guess that's good? Still, I know it's not about the length so much as what you do with it (HUR HUR HUR), so - yeah. I really really hope you like this, fiercynnRead more... )

fic, help haiti, definitely not merlin!

I like how the masked figure was actually trying to make people understand that magic didn't have to be evil. Harold was causing havoc, but only to change people's minds for the better. Too bad he lost his way at the end there.

Merlin realizing that he's been oblivious is very cute, too.

I'm really glad that all came through for you - it was hard to know how to pitch the character so that he was flawed, but also sort of likeable and understandable. Cheers for commenting!

You have done BEAUTIFUL WRITINGS my friend. But seriously, I know I say this every time but I really do enjoy all the things you write.

I wish I had time to go through and pick out all the quotes I loved but I cannot there are too many.

Oh alright then.

The room was, as ever, somewhere between 'elegant and impressive' and 'a little bit of a tip'. - Bit like Arthur then.

Gaius had once said to him, wasn’t it hilarious that Merlin’s job was to clear up after a fellow of about his own age when he was so utterly incapable of clearing up after himself? Merlin had agreed that it was, of course, hilarious. - Gaius you are a ~parent~, admit it.

I love the story about the timber falling over and it’s just all these fleeting characters and asides you make up that really flesh out the world.

The day after that, something very unusual had happened with a horse. - Heh.

"It’s pithy," said Arthur. "Sort of. I suppose." - Arthur desperately wants a nick-name, yes?

They’d already had some manner of Conversation, in fact, that involved a lot ( ... )

Merlin couldn’t help thinking, oh, you’re good. - Yes! Merlin - pretty freaking clever. Sometimes.

the weight of disappointment in his chest so heavy and all-consuming that he almost ran into Gaius without realising he was there, and let out a slight, involuntary shriek upon noticing him.

He managed to turn it into a high-pitched, "Hello," and wondered if he’d gotten away with it. - I cannot even express to you how much I love this bit. It’s probably weird that this is one of my favourite bits but I shall not care.

"Merlin," said Arthur, blinking. Then, somewhat unncessecarily, "I seem to be having some difficulties." - Heh.

Merlin was beginning to come round to his way of thinking, re. 'Merlin you are useless at everything.' - I like how you’ve carried on the recurring theme from the show.

Still looking at Merlin with that complex expression, Arthur said, "No." - I am desperately trying to work out what this means, because I am slow. Does he just suspect Merlin is about to do something stupid? Does he know?

Merlin, who had ( ... )

AUGHHHHHHHHHHH this comment made me SO HAPPY that I can't even put it into words, rknyenylrnyrn. I wrote this fic in like, several desperate short bursts of madness, did a 2am edit and a pre-posting spellcheck & just felt generally pretty horrible about it. So having this amazingly lovely response from you (well, you are always lovely, but it never stops being dead exciting & much appreciated) pretty much just made my evening.

My main thoughts in response are:
a) Merlin - champion under-bed stuff hider since 2008. YES THIS.
b) ahahahahaha timid gays
c) I am desperately trying to work out what this means, because I am slow. Does he just suspect Merlin is about to do something stupid? Does he know?aHA. Now. This isn't something I expected people to really pick up on or find notable at all, but the thing is that, even if I'm writing from Merlin's perspective, obviously I know, to a certain extent, what's happening in all the other characters' heads (as does anyone). This was a moment in which - although Merlin didn't really realise it, ( ... )

c)Yes I did quite wildly misinterpret that didn't I? For some reason the far more obvious and sensible reading of 'no' as 'no I don't have anything to say', rather than 'don't' didn't occur - I guess I just like the idea that he uses his very last words to scold Merlin (why break the habits of lifetimes).

Your explanation of what was going on just made me go ~all squishy in the heart~. Oh Arthur, be more rubbish...

EEEEEEE YAY. I absolutely adore this! Harold is such a wonderful invention for the story because just like the citizens of Camelot, on the show we rarely see anyone but Merlin using magic lightly and for fun. Their scenes together reminded me a little of the happiness and freedom that Merlin showed in the episode with Freya where he could be honest with someone, but even better because it was someone who shared his powers. I love the image of Merlin and Harold wandering around the city planning pranks!

But of course, I love Merlin and Arthur's relationship best, especially with Arthur's slow realization that he doesn't believe magic is inherently bad - I loved the scene when Arthur admits that, and my heart broke a little for Merlin that he wasn't able to tell him then because it would clearly be more difficult and painful later. I was also so glad that although Harold did threaten Arthur, it still wasn't a reason for him to revert completely to hating magic unequivocally like it would have been on the show. I AM SO FREAKING GLAD THAT YOU ENJOYED IT. I've never done anything like this before, really, I don't do yuletide or anything because I suck at deadlines (I love the wooshing noise etc) & can't deal with the ~pressure~, so this whole experience was like a big terrifying Thing for me. And then I haven't written in this fandom for more than a year and jengtrlngr I was just. yeah. I'm so relieved you don't hate it & all the things that I wanted to come through came through and and and yes. In conclusion: thank you & hooray & muchos love back at you, dear! xxxxxx
