FAQ: Как местные жители к вам относятся? Часть 1. FAQ: What do the villagers think of you? Part 1

Jun 05, 2014 08:23

It is hard for me to answer for them, so I decided to ask them to tell you themselves. This, for starters, is how my neighbor Antonina Ivanovna, the former postlady, answered that question. She used to walk nine kilometers to the neighboring village to fetch the mail twice a week.  I caught her in her garden at 10 pm.  The video was shot by an amateur (me).

[Transcript in English:]
Antonina Ivanovna:  “What do I think of you?  I care for you just as I would for my own family. Without you, we would be goners.  If it wasn’t for you, we wouldn’t have electricity, and whatever we need, you always help out, with the horse, or whatever we ask, for a ride - anything in the world.  We would be goners without you.  Three invalids in this village.

Me:  What would we do without you here?

Antonina Ivanovna:  Oh, don’t even talk (in Ukrainian).  You could live without us, but we can’t without you.  I can tell you…oh, I don’t even have to say it.  Without you, the village would be completely gone.  There would be only three invalids here whom no one needs.  The fact that you live here…thank God you live here.

Me:  Yes, the village is dying.  There are hardly any people left.

Antonina Ivanovna:  The village is dead.  It isn’t dying; it is already dead.  So, Laura, I care about you with all my heart and soul, can’t even describe it.

Me:  Ah, let me give you a hug for that…
