Isn't that the plight of artists everywhere? Artistic value versus commercial value? The reason there are so many starving artists out there? Artists (of the drawing and painting variety) are forced to do commercial drawings for a buck. Dancers rarely get steady, paying gigs and are usually treated as backdrops. So I'm sure photographers are in the same boat.
Bear with me while I act all comtemplative for a moment: it's a sad thing that society puts so little attention on the arts; the only "arts" people care about are the ones which generate cash. Ironically, these are also the "arts" that require the least amount of talent - pop singers readily come to mind. I mean seriously, Hannah Montana?? How is Miley Cyrus a popular singer? Pussycat Dolls? Really? Britney? Jessica? Girlicious? Are we living in some Bizarro-world here where no-talent equals big money, but real talent means you starve?
