Ok, I've posted about this in replies before, but I wanted it to have it's own post and see what other's thoughts on this are, so let's talk Hyena Kings.
I think Narcissus and the hyenas are yet more evidence that LKH gets off on her so-called research. She'll find two tidbits of knowledge and try to build an entire species, which can be done-but then she really shouldn't be citing her Biology degree every two minutes either. Honestly, if she just wants to make up new species, she should just do it, rather than trying to have a "factual" basis all the time.
The fact that she appears to be referencing an outlandish claim made against hyenas (that they are hermaphrodites) makes me wary of her so called biology degree. It's just eye-roll-worthy.
I think LKH did a last minute turn at the end of the book. She was way too uncomfortable with the idea of Narcissus and Asher having gay sex she decided that this would mean that since he was part female it was ok. Just my opinion on the way it appeared at the end of the book
What an interesting topic choice. I never really thought of his/her character that way, I guess i've just glossed through the last few books, i don't really read them in any depth. But your probably right, it's probably another glaring example of Hamilton taking a good idea or a myth and turning it to shite.
Does anybody wonder why Hamilton has such a fear of gay sex? I mean look at the tip toeing around with Asher and JC, same with Asher and Nathaniel, also Sylvie's sexuality changing to straight. I mean she seems to be blaming all the homophobia on poor Richard, but it seems to be the author speaking through the words rather then the character's themselves, or at least to me. And if she's so homophobic why have vaguely "bisexual" characters in the first place? Most people can read between the lines and know that Asher is out right gay for a start, why not just call him gay and get on with it?

Not-so-modly: His name is spelled -us, not -es =)
