What is Narcissus Afraid Of?
Ok, I've posted about this in replies before, but I wanted it to have it's own post and see what other's thoughts on this are, so let's talk Hyena Kings.
Anybody else here a fan of Narcissus or at least fascinated by him? I'm not sure why I am, but he's the cross-dressing BDSM aficionado bondage club leader of a HUGE group of all male gay bodybuilding were-hyenas. I think it's his WTF? factor that makes him so interesting to me.
The most interesting point about him I think is the fact he's a hermaphrodite. How did he get to be a hermaphrodite? Human hermaphroditism is rare, and it's even rarer still that they are "true" hermaphrodites and have both ovarian and testicular tissue. They are almost always infertile, though there have been odd cases where a hermaphrodite has become pregnant or impregnated another. But if fertility is present, it favors either female or male, not both. Human hermaphrodites are also notoriously asexual, having little to no desire to persue sexual relations, contrary to popular thought.
Yet Narcissus is rather hyper-sexual and in spite of appearing to be a cross dressing male, also managed to become pregnant. So I'm highly doubting that he/she was born a true human hermaphrodite, but started life as either fully male or fully female. How did this gender anomaly happen to him? My theory is it's probably part of hyena magic.
The concept of the gender shifting Hyena King is a real world legend that I'm certain LKH is making a nod to in choosing Narcissus' mixed gender. Real hyenas are matriarchal (as LKH is SO fond of pointing out repeatedly) but the genitalia on females has formed to outwardly appear masculine. So for a long time, people thought there were no female hyenas, but they must all be hermaphroditic.
This is where the concept of Narcissus gets even worse. He/she refuses to have a female in his pack due to the fear that a female would take over and he wouldn't be able to hold it. The problem with this line of "logic" is that Narcissus technically IS female. He/she became pregnant, and if the shifting gender is part of master hyena magic, then what exactly is Narcissus afraid of? Supposedly he/she is a very powerful leader of a large group with distinct presence of not just hyenas, but badass huge bodybuilding hyenas. He/she must have spent YEARS recruiting from gyms catering to gay clientele.
Narcissus also loves him/her some major pain, so the implication there is that he/she is badass enough to whip any female hyena that comes his/her way and enjoy it. So wouldn't having males only be a detriment to the pack?
As usual, I think this is a bag of dropped marbles when it comes to LKH's character concepts. LKH wanted some serious gay bodybuilding yaoi complete with whips and chains and didn't think it through. I think the whole "pregnancy" was just a shocker thing she thought up at the end of NiC (and subsequently totally forgot to tell the rest of us it was miscarried).
Which is a good thing, because I think Narcissus has enough on his plate dealing with bad plot without Chimera's psycho baby.
So, that's my thoughts on Narcissus. I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks about him/her and take bets on whether or not he's going to bow to the Crotch of Doom (as far as I know he hasn't shown interest, but I haven't read DM or Whorlequin).
