It is canon, for what that's worth: in a parent/teacher conference with Finstock, the coach can't pronounce Stiles' first name and says something to the effect that the Sheriff must really love his wife [to have agreed to the name]. Glimpses of the student file seemed to show it started with a "G", hence the "Genim" fanon, although Jeff D. has gone on record saying that's not it. (Whether he'll change his mind, or has anything in mind at all, is another thing entirely.)
Having said that, I'm always of the opinion that canon is merely a starting point. :D
