Are you looking for any particular types of icons? Fandom related and the like? I've found some decent icon communities just by using the search.

Books, antiquey old looking things, letter writing, redheads, Doctor Who, Primeval, Torchwood, Firefly, historical thingys, UK, New Zealand, tea, cats, .....

Enough for a start? {G} I was playing with the search earlier today. Any favorite places you like to check on a regular basis?

I got most of my Firefly ones at ff_icons. Some Doctor Who/Torchwood ones that Wiccy watches are dwicons and torchwoodicons. A Primeval community that has icons, but not exclusively, primeval_itv, and one that is, primevalicons. That's a rather small sampling. Didn't have much luck finding comms for the other interests you listed, but I'm sure they're out there. The above suggestion for basic bases might have a lot of them in there. And the below suggestion to just skim other people's icons is good, I've found a good many of mine that way.

Sadly, some of my favorite icon makers left LJ some time ago.

I make a lot of mine. And the rest I kind of stumble on. A lot of times I go skimming through other people's user pics, and if something looks interesting and has a maker credit, I look up the maker. It's all kind of catch as catch can.

For book/author/illustrator/reading icons, I like book_icons, and for general pretty icons I like raptureicons.

If there's any particular fandom you fancy, I can rec some of those as well, especially Doctor Who ones, like dwicons and tennant_icons.

Sadly I haven't found much in the way of knitting icons - mainly just knit_icons, which hasn't been updated in ages.

Glad (and jealous!) to hear spring is springing where you are! I think we may have to wait a bit longer here.....
