Hello all!  I just joined the group and am glad to have found a community like this!  I'm a college student, so I have a little more time in the summer between classes to catch up on reading.  Does anyone have any suggestions for good reads about pro-choice issues ( Read more... )

yay for The Handmaid's Tale (even though it's depressing)

ok I maybe you've read some, or all, maybe not, but I liked these:

Choice: True Stories of Birth, Contraception, Infertility, Adoption, Single Parenthood, and Abortion by Bender, Karen E.

The Girls Who Went Away: The Hidden History of Women Who Surrendered Children for Adoption in the Decades Before Roe v. Wade by Ann Fessler

How the Pro-choice Movement Saved America: Freedom, Politics, And the War on Sex by Cristina Page

Back Rooms: Voices from the Illegal Abortion Era by Ellen Messer

All highly recommended. I don't think I've heard of Means of Reproduction, I'll add that to my 'to read' list.

I was going to say The Girls Who Went Away. Absolutely stunningly heart-wrenching.

Cannot recommend This Common Secret highly enough.

Abortion and Life was also an amazing book.

I second This Common Secret. Especially in light of recent events.

The Story of Jane. Such an incredibly good book.

(Which I lent to my mother, and which she has yet to give back to me...)

Another vote for This Common Secret and The Girls Who Went Away. I'd also recommend:

Pregnancy and Power: A Short History of Reproductive Politics in America by Rickie Solinger

Beggars and Choosers: How the Politics of Choice Shapes Adoption, Abortion and Welfare in the United States by Rickie Solinger

Beyond Choice: Reproductive Freedom in the 21st Century by Alexander Sanger

From the heavily-science-related side, I recommend Lee Silver's "Challenging Nature," which addresses a lot of issues including stem cell research and alternative medicine. Lots of interesting points about how we define "human" and "life."
