Mixit themes and themes from The Style Contest

Oct 11, 2006 12:34

We just released Mixit, which is really the same as Expressive except for one thing - while Expressive is ported-over Vox themes, Mixit has themes that are specific to LJ, that will only be available on LJ. We chose the name Mixit because it will be a mix of various layouts (some will be cute, some will be dark, some will be clean, etc. etc ( Read more... )

D'you think you could actually put previews in those previews? I don't want to lose my current style because it's highly customized, and a free test account won't let me choose a lot of the styles that are only for paid accounts. Not letting us see them is kind of limiting their usefulness... :|

That'd be nice.

i agree.
it's highly annoying to think that these so called previews would actually have a preview. unless preview means something different to LJ ... something like "haha, tricked you, suckers !"

There is a way to see the style without losing your current style or even changing from it.

Go here.

In the "Create Style" selection, put a name and then press "Create". You'll then be taken to another page to fill out the details.

Pick "Mixit" for the Layout and then the Theme option will pop up and you can select "Nevermore". Save the changes. You'll be taken back to the "Your Styles" page and the new style you created will be listed with the name you gave it. It won't be in use, but you can see what your journal would look like in it by clicking the number link next to the name.

Awesome! Can't wait to see it all.
Have specific holiday layouts ever been thought of, like Christmas and Halloween? I know that I would be interested in using that if it was available.

How about some nice Expressive themes for the holidays, Halloween, Christmas, etc., etc.? Thanks!

Bear in mind that the Style Contest wasn't just for LJ, it was for Movable Type and Typepad too, so not all the layouts will have been designed with Livejournal in mind. LJers actually had to lobby to get usericons included on the example templates they were giving out. Plus, the contest rules were pretty clear that copyright remained with the individual designers, so it wasn't really up to LJ to start hacking them about. Besides which, it would have taken up time and resources that the staff here don't necessarily have.

If you don't like the styles on offer, best thing to do is not use them. Or use the custom CSS feature to sort them out yourself.

I like Expressive fine, except that I can't figure out how to put the content on the left without digging into the CSS. It looks like Mixit has this option out front in a much more straightforward way. Could Expressive have the same option? Or does it have that option in a place I haven't found yet?

I'd actually love to ditch the leftnav column entirely if I could. I like a slim clean journal but would love to use the Expressive styles for it.

"Nevermore" is MUCH "cuter" than any of the styles in Expressive, by the way.

That's funny because Mixit's Nevermore is Expressive's Poe - till they fix it anyway. ^_^ But you're right. I think it's more original too.

I took another look and you're right, there it was in the previews!

I guess what I'm saying is that most the Vox themes look really clean and "designed," even if they feature butterflies and kitties and robots, whereas the torn paper thing looks more like a "cute" effect. Not making any judgments on whether "cute" is bad or not (I'm down with the cute).

*nods* Wait till you see the other two made by Piximix. Cute indeed. :)
