On Friday, we invited you to request gift certificates to apply to DonorsChoose.org, the non-profit organization where you can choose a classroom project in need of funding that's been submitted by public school teachers.

Your response has been overwhelming. A BIG ( Read more... )

Chose to fund Lion's Land, a project to buy a Montana classroom a simple plush rug for their reading area, to help the kids have a comfortable area to read. So simple.

As a teacher who just spent an insane amount of money this summer on a rug, I thank you for doing that. It seems like the lamest thing, but it really does make a big difference in comfort, not to mention making the classroom look comfortable/inviting for the kids. :-)

I think a lot of people would have complained about getting spammed if this had been in news. :/

Ding ding ding. You know they would have.

Sooo irritating, that even when a company does great things people still will find things to bitch about on those projects too.

I chose The Joy of Reading because literacy at a young age is a huge passion of mine.

Thanks again for bringing attention to such an awesome cause. I'm going to set up a challenge soon, but probably through my public blog.

But since there are so many HP fans and D&D geeks, I thought I'd mention it:

xochizlan is a high school teacher in the south Bronx. He has put in two project proposals with DonorsChoose. Here's an outline of both, in case people are looking for something to support.:

1. For the HP fans. What follows are his words, not mine:

I have a student who has some serious problems with reading. At the end of last year I made a deal with her that if she would read them with me I would buy her a copy of each Harry Potter book, and that we would try to read all seven by the end of the year. At the start of this year I thought what was an even better idea was to get a small group together, all classmates and friends, some strong readers and some with weaknesses, and we'd read it as a circle ( ... )

That is totally awesome.

And yes, D&D books tend to be very expensive - $30-35 a piece - and there are a lot of them, so it's hardly fair to ask kids to have their own copies if they want to participate. For this project, it sounds like they'll need the set of three core rulebooks (Player's Handbook, Dungeonmaster's Guide, and Monster Manual), and anything else would be cool but not completely necessary.
