elections

So it's Student Government election time at UF, at least for senators, which means of course it's all lies, corruption, voting errors and then of course being bombarded by party representives everywhere you go on campus. After 2.5 years at UF, I've managed to learn how to dodge them, through a variety of tactics ( Read more... )

Do you remember the South Park episode "Douche and Turd"?

For me, it's not apathy so much as it is just pure revulsion.

Additionally, I don't feel like either party runs on a legitimate platform. The things that they claim to be prepared to do if elected could be done regardless of who wins and yet, NEVER get done. In the grand scheme of things I don't care who gets elected because honestly, would the other guy handle the job differently once elected? I don't think so. (This isn't to say that you're wrong or that you shouldn't vote. It's just that I see things differently.)

As far as I've seen, SG is a sham. It's nothing more than a resume-builder for wannabe politicos to use and to network.

I don't really watch South Park, but I get the drift.

I agree that the campus politics are gross from both sides... but I think when Jamal was president things were less shady than now (but Jamal also had a fully greek senate, so he couldn't do very much).

All I know is the Impact party candidate for president last fall was a WHOLE lot less shady than Goldberg. He's sooooo creepy. Gross.

While I agree that SG is a sham, they also get millions of dollars of student money to spend, and I'd rather not have that solely in the hands of such a small representation of the campus. Their wants/needs don't represent the rest of the non-Greek campus.

I lived next door to Jamal on campus and EVERY TIME he would see me he would shake my hand, and tell me to vote for him. It just got really old to me. You'd think after doing the same shpiel so many times he would have possibly recognize me. I mean...I lived RIGHT NEXT to him.

Jamal did the exact same things that the Greek people did. He pulled rank in his ROTC unit and made everyone on the BMDT vote for him (two of my roommates were on BMDT). He still had specialized interest politics, just instead of frats...he targeted other groups. No offense to Jamal, it's just...that's how it's done.

So I don't know. But what I DO know is that no matter who gets elected, I won't see a dime of the SG's budget. Of course, I'm not involved at all involved on campus. But I've talked to Senators and found out why they don't spend their money on things that I can use, and they always pass the buck. "Oh, that's someone else's responsibility, we don't control that."

I'm not saying Jamal was perfect, I'm just saying he's better than Goldberg. I don't think any of the student politicians are perfect, otherwise I'd actually be out campaigning for them.

we end up having a student government run entirely by Greeks because they can mobilize voters…

Not to say that UF doesn't have a problem, but that's how every election ever runs. I know, I'm a huge cynic, but look at the 2004 election. I agree that making people vote is a dirty unethical tactic, but it is one way to get that bloc secured. Just an evil way.

Oh I know, I just hate that they can get away with it so easily when they're incredibly outnumbered.

I can't imagine campus politics being such a big deal, and you guys have parties and everything. I guess that comes with a big school. Our Undergrad population is right at 1000. So, only one or two people actually run. But you are right on one thing, Greeks usually win.

Wow, I can't even imagine only having 1000 students! The freshman class when I came here was something like 6,000, I believe.
