“You know what we need, bon?” Bella stood with her hands on her hips in the middle of the room, staring down at her boyfriend, who had no idea what she thought they needed but already knew that it was not something he’d like or something he could argue against.

He sighed in resignation and folded up his newspaper. “No, Bella, I don’t know. Tell me, what do we need?”

“A cat!”

“A… Cat?”

And of course, Adam chose this exact moment to wander in with a biscuit between his teeth. “A kitty?” He asked, spiting chocolate crumbs everywhere and causing Terrence to frown at him and make a mental note to vacuum. “That’s a great idea, Bellatissimo!” And as his two roommates grinned in understanding over his head, Terrence knew he’d already lost. And so it was that three days later he was stuck driving home from the animal shelter with his best friend and his girlfriend reciting baby talk in the backseat to a small ball of white-and-orange fur.

“Ooh, my baby,” Bella cooed, nursing the kitten in her arms, “My pretty baby, aren’t you precious.”

“You’re a gorgeous girl, now aren’t you?” Adam said in a stage whisper, wriggling a finger in the kitten’s face and leaning close with an arm around Bella’s shoulders. “Aren’t you? Aren’t you just?” He grinned at her, and she blinked back. Without turning away, he asked, “What are we gonna name her, Bell?”

“Ah, I don’t know.” Bella titled her head to one side. “How about… Cornflakes?”

Adam snorted and shook his head. “Nu-uh. Would you seriously name anyone after your breakfast cereal?”

Bella coloured and frowned. “Oh shush, you. If you’re so clever, what would you call her?”

“Fenria.” He said promptly, grinning. Bella laughed and ruffled his hair.

“So it’s not alright for me to name her after a cereal, but it’s fine for you to name her after your motorbike?”

“Hey,” He held a hand to his heart, feigning hurt. “My woman’s name is Fenrir, thanks, not Fenria.”

Bella snorted and rolled her eyes. “Your bike is not a woman, and you are not dating her. And even if it she was a woman, you wouldn’t have a chance.”

“Gasp! You wound me with your words, lady!”

Laughing, Bella turned to look at the back of her boyfriend’s head. “What do you think we should call her, bon?”

Terrence looked at the in the rear-view mirror, and the kitten turned her head to look back, which he found just a little strange. “You want to know what I think?”

“Yep,” Adam chirruped, now scratching the kitten’s stomach.

“I think we should name her,” And here he paused for effect, “Jane.”

“Jane?” The two of them chorused, as they exchanged a look. At the exact same time they broke into laughter.

“Jane? Hah, that’s a good one Terry!” Adam pretended to wipe a tear from his eye.

“No really, bon,” Bella pouted, “What should we call her?”

“I was serious,” Terrence went on in his usual monotone, turning on the windscreen wipers as the rain began to fall. “We should call her Jane. Jane Nyo-Bo Jones,”

“Are you sure?” Bella looked dubious. Adam looked much the same. Terrence shrugged and flicked his indicator on as they turned onto the main street.

“See what she thinks of it.”

Bella raised an eyebrow, but looked back to the animal in her arms. Clearing her throat, she asked hesitantly, “What about ‘Jane’?” The cat chose this moment to miaow loudly and start purring. Eyes widening in astonishment, Adam and Bella looked back to Terrence, who struggled to suppress a smile.

“I told you,” He deadpanned. “Jane Nyo-Bo Jones.”

“Jones? No, you must mean Le’Mont, bon.”

“No way! He means Kane!”

“Nu uh!”

“Ya huh!”

“No,” Terrence cut in smoothly. “Jones-for just that reason.”
