what linguists are allowed to do syntaxia November 11 2005, 23:40:10 UTC
making up stuff and constant bitching are definitely my favourites.

oh, and we're also allowed to smirk when people say things like "some languages are more developed than others" and take out guns when asked how many languages do we speak.

Personally I'd be more inclined to do it the other way around: take out the guns when people say "some languages are more developed than others", and smirk when asked how many languages (if I didn't suffer from monolingualism, that is).

I got really irritated when reading "Decision At Doona" where someone declared that because the aliens spoke a tonal language, that their culture must be ancient... (sigh)

Would you feel better if you knew that I ASKED her about that when I met her at Worldcon? *G* She kinda coughed and pointed out that Earth Tonal languages tend to be older ones. Oh, if I'd known then what I do now...

I recognise everyone but the pith helmet and the carrot up-chucker. And I never thought the Enterprise uniform was particularly flattering for her. Now, the Mirror Universe one... yummy...

Man, I miss Serenity. That movie rocked.

Both references to Milo Thatch from Atlantis: The Lost Empire, easily the best thing Disney's done recently. Of course, they were adapting Mike Mignola, how could it NOT rock?

So that makes it Daniel/Milo, Hoshi, Hoshi, Hoshi, Daniel, Milo and Milo?

Who's Mike Mignola?

You got it.

Who's Mike Mignola?

Amoung other things, the creator of HellBoy, and lead Production Designer of Atlantis - I was remembering it wrong, they didn't adapt a comic of his, they asked him to help develop the visuals and story. It just *FEELS* like Mignola comic, is all.

*sings* "Disco, Disco, Smith / I want to be / A Disco Smith..."

Oh yeah! Hey, what's Smith saying in that keyboarding icon? I can't pinpoint the word in his speech...

"Surrou.." in "Every mammal on this planet forms a natural equlibrium with its surrounding environment."

...I'm a freak.

Random person: That's not a real word. You just made that up!
Jim: Not to worry, I'm an amateur neologist.

My vocabulary is esoteric enough that some (including me, sometimes) have given up on guessing which of the words I use are ones I made up.

Artistic licence! Woot!

I loooooove that word "Neologist!"

And I love my Artistic Licence. I got it laminated and everything

You got yours laminated? Wow! I haven't even done that yet. I may have to now, though. The bar has been raised.

*grins*

There was a laminator in the GBLUR office, and I was BORED.

Thankee. For that, you get friended (grin). (That plus a recent interesting exchange with astrogirl2)

Thank you for the consideration, but I don't mind people knowing I'm 40. I resent the fact that I'm supposed to mind, wheras if I were a guy, it wouldn't matter.
I don't feel like I'm 40 anyway. I wear my hair in plaits, how could someone who's 40 do that?

I don't recognise most of the linguist references above, but yay linguists anyway! (I are not a linguist, I just like asking linguists questions)

(goes and looks up neologist) Yay! I have found a new interesting word!

Or, maybe, I'm just starting...[insert evil laugh here]

Heh, thought I was. And now I'm curious as to what that exchange could possibly be about...

Hee, well, I had you pegged at 35 at most - both Mature and young at heart.

Well, guess you're going to ask me questions - I don't mind, I get that alot. :D

Heh, thought I was.

Sorry, I don't have an automatic reciprocal friending policy. Since I do actually read everyone on my flist, I try to keep it down to a reasonable size.

And now I'm curious as to what that exchange could possibly be about...

Humanism, religion, the fact that you're a Christian (which I didn't know), being ashamed of jerks on one's own side, the rarity of finding persons of differing religion with whom one can carry on an intelligent conversation...
I was tempted to jump in, but I didn't.

Well, I think I'm informed enough to ask intelligent questions; I did first-year linguistics at Uni for fun, but that was many years ago and I've forgotten most of it. Also am related to two linguists, so I ask them questions...
