Well, it was deliberately meant to hearken back to African traditions by the guy who made it up created it, but AFAIK is not actually celebrated or even really known of at all in Africa itself.

Oh cool, you're going to watch The Pretender! I'm in S2 and it's totally awesome. What's fascinating is the backstory, which you get more of as the series goes on.
