DS9: As it turns out, the kids really ARE all right...

In many ways, “The Nagus” has a very traditional Star Trek spirit.

It’s yet another episode that posits the idea that peace, love, and understanding actually is possible between people from fundamentally different cultures. All it takes is a little trust, a pinch of stubbornness, and the optimism of children who haven’t yet quite caught on that ( Read more... )

I love these DS9 posts so much.

I am in general inclined to cringe at Ferengi episodes, but this one was pretty decent; it was also the only one where the Grand Nagus was at all watchable -- I like Wallace Shawn normally, but in this role? Not so much.

One of my favourite parts of DS9 is the development of Jake and Nog over the seasons. I love their loyalty to each other and the way they encourage each other to be the people they really want to be. Sisko and Jake have perhaps the most realistic parent-child relationship on any of the Treks; it's a joy to watch.

One of the things I love most about DS9 is how, when the writers did their jobs right, they remembered to let the plot serve the needs of the characters, and thus let the characters shine through, instead of the other way around, and still manage let the characters grow in ways that would surprise you yet still be believable. And not just the cast of regulars, but the ever-growing cast of recurring and supporting characters. I think both the show's producers and the audience owe such early recurring actors as Aron Eisenberg and Max Grodenchik a debt of gratitude for doing such wonderful work in the beginning of the show, as well as showing that a steady recurring cast would be a benefit to the Trek universe. (As well as Andrew Robinson, Marc Alaimo [Best. Three-Dimensional. Villain. Ever.], and Rosalind Chao, who also appeared in the first season. I don't count Louise Fletcher until the second season, in part because her appearance in the first season isn't until the season finale and I had no idea she would return again, and ( ... )

Still lovin' the DS9 posts!

I actually rather like some of the Ferengi episodes. Partly that, well, virtually all the actors are so darn good, partly that the Ferengi fulfill such a good 'mirror' role, while at the same time being incredibly comical. Some of the eps are rather weak and a bit sledgehammery - but The House of Quark (Ferengi-Klingon crossover) is one of my all-time favourites, then there's Little Green Men which is an absolute scream, and the Merchant-of-Venice riff where Liquidator Brunt tricks Quark into believing he has a terminal illness and selling him the dessicated cubes of his body, and then comes along to enforce the contract... Trek Gold!

DS9 made me actually look forward to Ferengi stories. Can't agree with you enough on Wally Shawn!

It's ironic that you can see Nog's ultimate reason for wanting to break with Ferengi tradition (he doesn't want to end up in his father's position) used in an episode where Rom isn't acting like the Rom we will eventually have. I realize the character changed but Rom in this episode strikes a sour note for me because he's not my Rom for all the reasons you mentioned above.
