Although the whole holosuites-gone-amok cliche has basically become very much a staple of the Next-Gen-and-on 'verse, it's something that (perhaps thankfully) hasn't been borrowed as much by other sci-fi series. Do you think that's a good thing or a bad thing? Is it a category of story that should remain confined to the Star Trek universe? Is it something that could be taken out of that setting, or would it not translate very well short of an entirely different technobabble setup?
(PS. SG:A's Atlantis looks suspiciously similar to DS-9; just, y'know, in water. Should we chalk up another mark of "creative borrowing" on the Stargate tally? *grin* )
Arguably SG1 and SGA both had their own 'holodeck' adventure stories. From the top of my head I can think of at least three eps where they got trapped in some kind of VR/dreamscape (though that still doesn't come close to trek's mandatory three eps a season).
I love that Quark's holosuites are brothels, considering that Roddenberry suggested such a thing when the holodecks were invented for Next Gen - but it was never used that way. Well, maybe that's the way Geordi was getting any action... I mean, he did recreate Leah Brahms on one, didn't he?
Poor Geordi. The man never got any. He either fell for holographic/completely unavailable women, or the women he fell for got stationed somewhere else and he never saw them again. No luck, man. No luck.
I think one of the first uses of a holodeck in Next gen had brothely overtures. Remember the ep where aliens took control of Enterprise and they loaded a holo girlfriend to distract the Captain and Riker? They were definetely heading for some loving... and I'm still grossed out that they both wanted to hit it with a hard light hologram.
I always did wonder if Sisko et al. got sent to DS9 partially because of lower-than-average scores in First Contact (and possibly Diplomacy?) courses at the Academy, though apparently stellar results in other classes.
