Between all the hip hop and rapping sung by Will, and the start of the whole 'Be a Man' trope, this is one of my least favorite episodes ever. And doesn't it seem wishy-washy that Will starts the Glee club only to ditch it a few weeks later for something with more personal gain? I still think Will running Glee club isn't about teaching kids, but about his issues about wanting to be back in his high school glory days. It's kinda funny, but while I never noticed how bad of a teacher until I joined fandom, when I go back and watch season one, I think his bad teaching was there from the beginning.
Anyways, he's a doll and takes her arm and offers to go shopping with her after school for a good outfit. As he walks off, Quinn and Santana come to try to make poor Mercedes think she should go out with Kurt, and that he's totally into her. Oh, lord. This is just a painful reminder of my own adventures with underdeveloped gaydar in high school.
Lol, the last sentence, had my own misadventures way back when, too.
Dammit, I meant to reply to this comment DAYS ago, because I love it SO MUCH! But I am a space cadet. Sorry.
GOD YES, the "be a man" trope that Glee can be SO heavy-handed with, and yeah, my dislike of Will is so strong from the beginning now. Each and every misstep has a spotlight on it.
And yeah, the Kurt/Mercedes bits were by far the highlight of the episode. I totally agree, Kurt puts up such a wall. It's in the name of self-preservation, of course, but it's not without its drawbacks. And he and Mercedes could absolutely take on the world together. I love them, and I'm sad that their friendship got pretty sidelined in Season 3 and beyond.
