I felt like a drug pusher helping Zoe find her thumb when she was too distraught to figure out how to get it in her mouth, but it did help us a whole lot with our sleep issues.
Don't beat yourself up over the paci, it's actually supposedly protective against SIDS early on. And patterns at 3 months are pretty easy to break.
At 4-5 months you can try Ferber. In fact, if you are interested, I got two Ferber books as presents and you can have the extra one (which is currently packed somewhere but should be unearthed in a week or so).
P.S. Ferber's book isn't just about training your infant to sleep through the night. It can help with problems with sleep up until teenagerhood. It may be useful for Peter's problems as well.
