Any photogs out there?

We got a new boss (same as the old boss) and this new publisher is sending me to remedial photography school. I've completed initial training and learned lots of fun new words - like BOKEH! and HISTOGRAM! - but I still want to study up in my off hours. I really need this job, and there's too many hungry college kids creeping around these days for ( Read more... )

Photofocus.com has some interesting articles discussing fundamentals, book reviews etc... with podcasts in which they answer questions from listeners. I also like http://digital-photography-school.com/
If you're into lighting and flashes and such, there's the invaluable strobist.com.

Here are the blogs of some photographers I like: zarias.com and http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog/
Also check out creativelive.com, which has free live courses on several topics, including photography. The live stuff is free, the downloads you have to pay for.

If you already have access to lenses, then Canon is a judicious choice. If you're into video at all, take a look at the Canon t2i.

Thanks very much for the tips. The Zack Arias site is brilliant; his philosophy musings on imagery, art, etc. are fascinating. :)

I learned a lot of basics by reading Lee Frost books years ago, and he's still around, I think. I will second the good opinion of www.photofocus.com as a resource. There are good groups on flickr that give many ideas for experiments to stretch yourself. For camera, if money is short, try a Rebel T1i. Build quality is better on T2i, but the T1i is a good body to get going with. Lenses are really more important than the body (IMO), so if you buy your own lenses, don't skimp!!! Good shooting!!!

Thanks much for the tips and good wishes - I will need them, I'm sure. :) My editor offered to sell me one of our cameras, a nicked-up t1i body with a LOT of hours on it, and a 50mm prime lens for $300. I think I'll gamble on it and work up from there.
