Signed a lease yesterday morning. And about a dozen other papers. One that says I can be fined $250 if I take the batteries out of the smoke detector. Another that says it's my fault if mold grows in the bathroom. I'll be charged $50/hour for any repairs that need to be done. Basically what I have learned is that a renter in this market has no ( Read more... )

Good God, that's a lot of agreements to sign to lease a place. Is this the place with the studio downstairs that you can sublet?

I'm so happy Suzanne is going to be there Friday! It will be nice for you to have some support with everything you're doing.

I hope Shakti has shown up by now.

No, this is not that house. This place is a little 2BR that is walking distance to school and downtown, biking distance to everywhere I need to get to, except the mountains and the rivers. I think Suzanne and I may be making a trip to the coast or the mountains sometime soon. I have been afraid to drive that far with my truck in such poor condition. She hit the road from Flagstaff today---is in northern CA now, visiting. I look forward to her arrival.

Wow - that's a harsh lease... I hope with all you had to agree to that there are
are some protections in there for you as well. Yeesh.

One thing I figure with the price of organic food is that if I'm going to spend an arm and a leg on something, then it should be for the food that goes in my body. I know it's expensive, but your body and your health are worth it.

Bottom line on the lease; he's a scroungy slumlord just like at the last place I lived. I won't ask him to do ANYTHING. I simply need to photographically document what it looks like now, so he can't get me on the other end. Tonight I cleaned up after his workmen. The gas still isn't hooked up. My life has been a challenge ever since I landed here, and it just isn't letting up.

I had a landlord in Chicago that still hasn't given me my deposit back. I moved into the place and it was beyond filthy. Unfortunately I didn't complain or document anything, so he says it wasn't like that. I need to get a lawyer, but it's BS. So definitely document everything. Even if you can beg, borrow or steal a video camera.

Bummer. Are you just going to school down there?

The coast in Oregon is beautiful but cold. It's a windy drive through the mountains and I bet it would be beautiful this time of year.

I think I prefer strict landlords because they are doing what they can to keep bad tenants out, meaning their properties should be better kept (in theory, I suppose). After my last house I'll never live somewhere that doesn't have a strict lease. Is your new place nice?

Ugh, moving is tough. I know it will get better for you.

My new place is a gooey little dump with ill fitting doors. But it's in a primo location, gets good light, and has ample space for the two of us. I rode my bike to school this morning, across the lovely river, and it took about 10 minutes. Not bad.
