Oooooh! My crochet's a little less rank-beginner than my knitting, but since you say this is open to both -- yes, count me in for at least one square. (I may promise a few more depending on how the response to this ends up going along and what sort of schedule you end up planning this on, but I can definitely find time and work fast enough to do at least one block in some relatively solid stitch.)

Awesome!

This is a perfect project for beginners. Remember, there are no mistakes, there are only VARIATIONS. Each square will bring to the whole work a distinctive texture, a history, a blessing.

I'm a beginner crocheter and I could do a square. This sounds like a lot of fun and the end result should be neat.

You bet!

I'm particularly thrilled to have crocheters because I'm 99% a knitter. A friend, who assembles granny-square afghans for another fundraiser, has promised to teach me how to crochet them together. So it will be fun and learning and passing-the-love-through for all of us!

YAY! Wow, how wonderful of you! :D

I pledge to knit six (6) squares. (I will happily pledge more if we don't have enough squares committed!)

As for a suggestion for a minimum bid, I'd say this is a pretty big one, and I'd like to see it go for a hefty sum. I would start it at $50, given the number of people and the amount of work that is being offered in collecting and sewing them up.

Thank you, thank you!

Six, way to go!

Okay, $50 sounds like a reasonable minimum bid: there is agreement from subsequent posts.

I can promise 4 squares. :)

ETA: I can also do more if we need them, I'm just limited by how much Plymouth Encore I have. ;) And I agree that the minimum bid should be a bit high given how much work this will be to assemble. I've done one of these before, and it's a job of work!

ETA2: Also, if you don't mind a 12" square, I can promise a square with a Celtic style cabled lover's knot like the center of this piece. The border cable puts the square at 20", so I can only do the 8" center motif with a narrower border as yet to be determined.

OMG that is so beautiful!!! It would make a stunning center to the afghan.

Yesyesyes!!

XD The border really "makes" the square, I think, but the central motif does work on its own. :) I'll think up something to go around it that still sets it off.

If you're open to machine washable but not machine dryable, I've got some cream colored superwash wool I could use for this. And if you don't mind a delay (and cables worked up in variegated yarn, lol), I could even dye it in a rainbow gradient. Sadly, I'm not dyeing again until Sept. But I could get it to you in the first week of September, with, say 4 other squares worked up in Plymouth Encore. Otherwise, it'll have to be worked up in green, grey, or yellow as that's all I've got on hand of an acrylic blend.

Incidentally, are you on Ravelry? I'm "djinnj" there, also. :)

Oh my god, it would be out of this WORLD if you did that in a hand-dyed rainbow!!! (and I am so friending you on ravelry....)

I pledge at least four squares, by sept 1 at the latest. And I agree on starting at $50 or thereabouts. Should we decide on a semi-uniform yarn material? Like, wool/wool blends, or something?

Wonderful!

I was thinking of machine-washable yarns for ease of care and durability. As long as the squares are about the same size (6") the weight of the yarn is not that important, and having a mix of bulky and lighter weights will add textural interest.

What about colors? I have tons of colors in my stash.

If 's large square is the centerpiece, we might follow her lead in palette. Maybe rainbow hues, either solid if you're doing a textured stitch or variegated?
