For Offer #2 - a question. chiave_trust July 5 2008, 23:50:23 UTC
Hmmm. I actually want to bid on this for a friend (who's writing a planned series of YA novels), would that be okay?

Sure. That's great, as long as I'll be able to contact her after this is over.

Apparently my friend's doing a rewrite, but I'll donate anyway, and you two can sort it out amongst yourselves (it wasn't something I could predict, really).

How should I contact you?

Just out of curiosity, who do you review for? Voya or the like?

I review for TeensReadToo.com and I have my own blog. I get books sent to me from authors, publicists, agents, and publishers so I'm usually pretty busy with it.

Yeah that's cool. My dad is a pretty big reviewer too, haha, he's been on the Printz committee and is sitting Caldecott right now--he's at ALA right now and the books he's gotten in just the week he's away have been ridiculous. Teens Read Too is a good program. You should look into doing stuff for VOYA, I don't think it's too hard to get into especially if you're already doing reviews.

That's cool. I just looked into VOYA and you have to be a librarian or something like that.

Sorry that this really has nothing to do with the post, but I'm really curious to see how you became a book reviewer. I'm a teen too, and that would be something that would really interest me!

I started by email Jen at TeensReadToo.com. She gets tons of books from publishers then sends them out to reviewers. It's really fun and if you're new to reviewing, I suggest joining.

Then I started my review blog (harmonybookreviews.wordpress.com) and reviewed the books I had. As I posted more reviews, authors and publicists began sending me books.

Thanks! I e-mailed her about a week ago, but haven't heard back yet.

Was the blog seperate from the teensreadtoo.com website? Is it something a person could just start on their own? And if so, how do the publishers hear about it?

Thank you for answering my questions, I know I have a lot of them, haha.

If you haven't heard back from Jen yet, you should try emailing her again. She usually gets back to you within a day or so.

The blog is separate. You set it up on blogspot or wordpress or any other host. Then you just put reviews on etc. If you review an author's book, it's good to email them and tell them. They might be interested in doing an interview or giveaway.

There's so no secret to getting publisher's to notice you. The best thing you can do is read other reviewer's blogs, authors blogs, etc. and comment. Get the word out about your blog.

Some reviewer blogs I recommend:

thestorysiren.com
thecompulsivereader.blogspot.com
thepageflipper.com (though she quit. It's still good to look at the pages)
teenbookreview.wordpress.com (she's on vacation right now, though)
and my blog - harmonybookreviews.wordpress.com
