Sort of.
Anyone read comics? Know about the X-Men? They started life as a close-knit, elite group of mutants. They weren't related, but they were family.
Everyone knows about Cyclops aka Scott Summers and Jean Grey, who spent YEARS dancing around each other before FINALLY admitting their feelings and becoming the X-Men's celebrity couple. THEN something happened that made comic book history. It's commonly referred to now as The Phoenix Saga or The Dark Phoenix Saga. One of the tag lines for the story was 'witness the birth of a god!' (perhaps you see where I'm heading with this...?)
Anyway, it went something like this -
When an outside force put the people she loved in terrible danger, Jean risked everything to keep them alive. Originally she tapped into a latent part of her mutant power, though this was later retconned and it's more widely accepted that she absorbed an outside force known as the Phoenix Force. In any case, this elevated her to heights of power she'd never dreamed of. She became one of the most powerful beings in the universe.
Soon after, the magnitude of this power began to corrupt her. She took to the heavens and destroyed anything that got in her way...
Before long she was even killing innocents without a thought.
But, of course, her love for her friends and for Scott brought her back to herself in the end. They promised to help her control her power, but Jean knew there was only one way to be sure she could never hurt anyone again. She had to get rid of her power. And the only way to do that was to destroy it, and herself, completely.
The end? Think again. Many comics later it was revealed (retconned) that the Jean who had become like a god and destroyed planets was in fact merely an incredibly powerful psychic projection. The real, physical Jean was still alive and lying dormant at the bottom of Jamaica Bay (or, you know, some random lake if you're going by the films - which don't stick to the officially Phoenix Saga timeline either, fyi), where she and the X-Men had originally fallen when Jean first absorbed the Phoenix Force.
I'm just saying - there are some striking similarities here is all. Tell me I'm not the only one thinking this! Please, please tell me? It's really no fun being crazy on your own...
