I have this kind of on-off relationship with running, where I am very enthusiastic for a couple of weeks and run lots, and then die off for a week or so before getting back into it. This is not good. I really need to be more consistent and stop using unconvincing excuses. With this is mind, I've entered myself for a 10km in Oxford in May, and am ( Read more... )

I'm generally against adding words for the sake of it, but I think if you could add maybe another 200-300 then that might be a good idea, because when you are that far under the word limit it looks like you couldn't think of what else to say, rather than you have come to the end. I don't know how it works in the sciences, but are there any other people you can talk about/reference previous studies in the field? (I spend most of my papers putting my work in the contexts of current scholarship in the field).

However on the other hand if you are happy with it, it might be best to just go with that. If you have covered everything and are sure that there is nothing else you want to add.

Yeah, I think I can probably flesh out my explanation of background research. I think that's the only area where it won't look like I'm just adding words for the sake of the word count. Thanks!

I think it's better to be short than to add in stuff that will detract from your paper, but if you could squeeze another 200 words in somewhere... maybe in the background material, where you talk about theory and such?

Yeah, I'm going to try and find a few more papers to talk about, hopefully about vaguely relevant material! It is pretty short :/

Is there time beforehand to email the prof? I had a situation like this once and assumed I needed to add more, but when I asked the prof he said the short length I had was perfectly fine.

Hmm good idea. I'm going to go to one of the lecturers who set it to ask an intelligent question about statistics (okay, so more of a 'I can't do any of it, please explain it to me right from the beginning..') and I could ask him then about length. Thanks :)

Well, I wouldn't add words just for the sake of adding. Of course if you see a place where you can still expand a bit without sounding too vague that would be good :)

Yeah, that's what I'm keen to avoid. I'm going to try to add some good stuff in.

Oh, and I suddenly realised that I think I gave you my non-uni address so your card might be a little delayed in getting to me as my mum has to forward it but I've asked her to forward me any interesting stuff quicksmart and she says there's something she's just sent so it might be from you?? Very excited!!

I've discovered that reading the entries in runners every days makes me feel very guilty about not running, or at least working out (for me). ;P

I used to read the entries quite a lot, but there are just so many of them now the swamp my f'list and I get a bit overwhelmed and I must admit to skipping over them. I should start reading them for motivation purposes though, you're very right!
