Does anyone know what to do if a document mysteriously DISAPPEARS from your computer? Like.. seriously disappears... not in recent documents, not coming up in a search, not in the recycling bin... just GONE. I know I saved it multiple times, so I have no idea what happened. Would auto recovery have it or something? This is totally awesome and ( Read more... )

Was it something you were sent as an email attachment and you started editing from there?

Ah! That's totally what happened (sent myself a copy of it from my old computer onto my laptop, then edited it), but I don't see anything in my temp. internet files. The things I open just look like this ( ... )

okay, if you're using xp (or as I like to call it, expenis) not all your temp files show up even if you select "show hidden files".

If you were using outlook or outlook express, open your original document, and open the word file again. Now click save as to where you want it to be. It should be there. Also, you will see a default save to folder that is where your internet files go... usually it's called "OLKD_ _ _ _" mine at work was OLKD69 (hee).

If you were using a web based email program, I don't know if you'll still be finding it the same place, but try going through

C:\Documents and Settings\your xp user name or the default user\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

It may be there.

randomly clicked through to your lj from the ucberkeley community, and saw this post. since it sounds like it's a laptop, why don't you drag it over to soda hall? there're cs student group offices in 343 and 345 soda which usually have people around during most of the day. i'm guessing someone there would be happy to help you.

Hey,

Thanks for the help. That's good to know! Jette (above) actually resolved it for me lastnight, thankfully. : )

Are you a CS major?

ah, cool. i should've noticed that earlier =)

i'm a grad student in the cs department, but i was here as an undergrad, so i know these groups quite well and can vouch for them being usually willing to help.
