I recommend Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series of books. Great stuff. If you like historical novels, there's Laura Joh Rowland's Sano Ichiro books -- sort of samurai detective novels set in 16th century Japan.
Well lessee. I'm a librarian specifically for childrens' services and also enjoy a lot of YA fiction :D A couple of books in that department I read recently and really liked were the Gilda Joyce: Pyschic Investigator series. The City of Ember is also very good. I've read Perelandra and That Hideous Strength. Perelandra is extremely intense. I liked it a lot but be prepared for a lot of theology. That Hideous Strength is a pretty good story but it is pretty long and drawn out and it takes an extra level of concentration to get through it all. I also just recently finished reading A Boy Named Shel, the biography of Shel Silverstein which was very good and full of so many good quotes! However do not read it expecting any rose-colored childhood glasses to stay intact ;D Also " The Invention of Hugo Cabret " is a MARVELOUS story. It uses illustrations and prose in such a beautiful and unexpected way. I highly recommend reading it.
Also I hope you get over that nasty cold soon! And belated congratulations on your wedding ^^
