Cross-dressing, London, 1970s

May 23, 2006 13:30

It's the late 1970s, in London, where would a man who's not an experienced cross-dresser or in entertainment go to buy some women's shoes that fit? Would there be shops in, say, Soho that would come to his mind to go to? Would a fetish shop sell shoes? Or would it have to occur to him to ask someone who performs in drag?

Thanks for any replies.

And he could probably say that he was buying the shoes for his wife or his mother, if anyone asked.

Or that he needed them for some amateur dramatics where he was dressing up as the pantomime dame...

In the first instance he might well go to a charity shop (Oxfam or the like) and buy large sized women's shoes there.

Hmmm, was Oxfam in London at the time? I remember it being an 80s/90s phenomenon, but that was in the provinces of Buckinghamshire, so I probably missed its early days. (And on the other hand, as a feminine size 9 (UK sizing), I can NEVER find shoes to fit me in charity shops ( ... )
