Apparently the high fever from Smallpox could cause blindness. Actually, any very high fevers can cause blindness--Helen Keller lost both her sight and her hearing due to fever at a very young age.

I knew a kid at school who got his eye poked out by a stick thrown by another kid and had a glass eye thereafter. I suppose you'd have to be pretty unlucky to get a stick in both eyes, but it could happen!
