We have the SAS, which are the Aussie equivalents of the spec ops, similar to the Green Berets, Army Rangers, etc etc which could lead to the US Marines visiting for stuff.
As for explosives... it would be really difficult to obtain, normally. Even fireworks cannot be sold without a license (and that's a license to set them off, not even to sell)
kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, emus, snakes (lots and LOTS of snakes), crocodiles, dingoes, spiders (er, not sure if you want to count them as 'wildlife'!).....
That's all I can think of for now (sorry, I left Australia when I was eighteen months old - all I can remember is that they have more dangerous snakes and spiders than we have here in New Zealand :D)
I lived in Australia for nine months and if you're setting this in the 'outback' then you'd more then likely find that the territory is mostly of flatland. Cherry bombs and dynamite you just won't find there.
As for school. Uniforms. They're very strict on the appearance of their students. If its a public school, every day but Monday's and special occasion days, they have the option of a button down and tie or a polo shirt. Uniforms are provided by the school. White socks and black polishable shoes.
I'd suggest researching the pop-culture before writing. Best not to depict Australia poorly. :)
plus. some farmers have some. for like blowing up tree stumps an dstuff. (though im not sure if you can get it anymore after the whole omgterrorists thing the entire worl dseems swept up in) shires often use gelignite for blowing through hard rock hills when building/fixing roads.
-Probably under a 1000. The town would just be one of those places that sort of happened when you have people in the area. So the size would vary for time of year.
Personally I wouldn't consider a town of around 1000 people particularly small. Then again, the town I went to Primary School in had around 300 people, which is a lot when you live on a farm.

They probably wouldn't have more then a few sticks, and it all goes into blowing up outhouses, or portable toilets.
