I'm trying to figure out how big a 18 foot python would be, just in the thickness of it's body, and then how large a space it would take coiled up, for a story idea about exotic animal smuggling

I know you marked this an answered but.... Go to the kingsnake.com forums. There's a lot of actual snake owners and breeders who could probably get actual measurements. It will probably vary a little bit between the different species and the sex. In Burmese Pythons, females are usually longer and more heavy bodied for example. Because it does make a difference between species. Ball Pythons, although a small example, are relatively thick and look heavy, but are rather lighter than you'd expect. Burmese are kinda fatties.
You could also try the livejournal herpers community, there might be someone there with experience - mine is all with much smaller snakes so I can't help much beyond the guesstimates I gave you.
In addition to herpers, there's also snakecommunity, if you haven't found what you've needed in one of the other very useful links people have provided :}. (My experience is also with smaller snakes, otherwise I'd get out my measuring tape for you!)
